Gilfillan

New Pictures from the Interwebs

Just got these pictures from a chap on Antique Tube Radios. Seems that Powell didn't actually make the radio but instead had them made by Gilfillan Bros. and sold them as a Powell. First picture I have got that had the the two electrolytic capacitors. I have already made them for this radio and them are different, oh well...

Marshon Assembly/Disassembly/Install

This post illustrates the assembly/disassembly of the Marshon capacitors in case of future capacitor replacement.

More Work on Mershon Cowpastures

Received the insulating shoulder washers today and thought I would see if my design is going to work out... I squared up the cap and expanded the cap a bit to fit snuggly inside the 1-1/4" copper pipe. Have not received the pipe yet...

Tuning Capacitor All Happy Now

Walnut Veneer arrived today

Front Panels Stripped and Tuning Capacitor Work

To replace the crumbling trimmer capacitor I bought a sheet of Mica from McMaster-Carr, just could not find it smaller/cheaper anywhere else. So I got the trimmer capacitor dielectric cut out and when testing the trimmer's range I discovered that water got into the tuning capacitor's mounting bolts so I had to take it all apart to dry it out... 20 effin nuts! Glad I had some ignition wrenches as there is not a lot of room in there.

Another Powell

In my quest to get a picture of the label on the back of the chassis I came across this radio on FB. Not a Powell but named an Oregonian. Was it made by Powell? There are some chassis differences, No toggle switch, tube shield cans instead of panels, Mershon(s) in a different location, and one less RF amp (224).

Update

A while back I posted "next Steps" so here is an update:

  1. Purchase:
    1. Lacquer
    2. Power Cord Wire
    3. Resisters
    4. Capacitors
    5. Veneer
    6. Feet - Felt?
    7. Cowpasture Cans (ebay?)
    8. Grill cloth?
    9. Power Cord Strain Relief
    10. Molding epoxy for capacitors and resistors
  2. Generate Schematic
  3. Generate Parts List
  4. Determine the state of the speaker
  5. Determine the state of the output transformer
  6. Determine the state of the grill cloth
Still updating the parts list to include new replacement parts. Plan to replace the entire wood top with new plywood and veneer. I will be making Mershon look alike cowpastures from 1-1/4" copper pipe and caps. Original feet appear to be thick felt which I have. Grill cloth has yet to be found. Chassis has been completely stripped except for tube sockets as they are good:

Next steps will be to make all the dogbone resistors and capacitors when parts get delivered, refurbush all the parts as necessary, refinish the cabinet, assemble, and align.
